INTERNAL FAMILY SYSTEMS
(IFS) THERAPY

WHAT IS IFS THERAPY?

Internal Family Systems, or IFS, is a powerful therapeutic approach developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz in the 1980s. Through his work, Dr. Schwartz recognized that we each have an “inner family” of parts—different aspects of ourselves that hold unique feelings, memories, and motivations. These parts often form in response to past experiences, especially traumatic ones, and they work to protect us, even if that means creating limiting and damaging patterns of behavior.

IFS is highly effective because it helps us understand and connect with these parts, leading to deep, lasting healing. Unlike coaching or traditional talk therapy, which might focus on managing symptoms or simply discussing issues, IFS addresses the root causes of emotional distress. By giving each part space to be seen and understood, IFS gently releases the burdens of past traumas, fostering true inner harmony.

In an IFS session, you’ll find not only relief from longstanding patterns but also the empowerment to reclaim your authentic self. This approach isn’t about fixing anything; it’s about welcoming every part of you, creating the foundation for genuine healing and self-acceptance.

IFS Protector Parts

These inner parts are protective parts that have developed to shield you from pain or discomfort.

The critical, judgmental, or controlling parts might try to prevent failure or criticism, while the anxious, fearful, or depressed parts might emerge to protect from future hurt or overwhelming feelings.

These parts often carry beliefs like "I'm not good enough" or "I have to be perfect," reflecting deep-seated fears or wounds that they are trying to manage or avoid.

WHO IS IFS FOR?

IFS can be incredibly beneficial for anyone seeking to heal and grow, but it’s especially helpful for those who feel stuck in repetitive patterns or who are struggling with unresolved emotional pain. Whether you're new to therapy or have already explored classic therapy or coaching, IFS offers a deeper approach that connects you with the parts of yourself that need healing.

      IFS is for:

  • People with past trauma: Whether from childhood, relationships, or life events, IFS helps you heal emotional wounds that continue to affect your well-being.

  • Those feeling disconnected from themselves: If you're struggling with self-doubt, low self-esteem, or inner conflict, IFS helps you reconnect with your authentic self.

  • People stuck in repetitive patterns: If traditional therapy or coaching hasn’t helped you break free from old habits or emotional blocks, IFS can help you get to the root cause.

  • Those experiencing anxiety, depression, or chronic stress: IFS works with the deeper parts of you to address the underlying fears and tensions that contribute to these conditions.

  • People struggling in their careers or with financial issues: If you’re feeling stuck or unfulfilled in your work or financial life, IFS can help uncover and heal the internal barriers that are holding you back.

  • People experiencing intense anger: IFS helps you understand the underlying causes of anger and work through the parts of you that carry it, so you can respond with greater calm and clarity.

  • Those seeking personal growth and self-compassion: IFS provides a path to greater self-awareness, self-acceptance, and healing, helping you embrace all parts of yourself.

  • Those wanting to improve relationships: By addressing internal conflicts, IFS can help you build healthier, more authentic connections with others.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • What can I expect to feel during an IFS session?
During an IFS session, you can expect to feel a mix of calm and introspection. As we connect with different parts of yourself, some may bring up emotions or memories, which is completely natural. You may feel emotional, but the session is designed to be a safe, compassionate space where we can process and heal these feelings. Many clients report feeling lighter, more peaceful, and empowered after a session, with a greater sense of self-awareness.
  • How many IFS sessions will I need?
The number of sessions can vary depending on your unique needs and the depth of healing you’re seeking. Some clients find significant relief after just a few sessions, while others may need more to address deeper wounds. We will work at a pace that feels right for you, and I’ll guide you through the process to ensure that each session brings meaningful progress.
  • Is IFS only for people with severe trauma?
Not at all! While IFS is highly effective for those with past trauma, it’s also great for anyone looking to improve their emotional well-being, understand themselves better, or break free from limiting patterns. Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, relationship issues, or career blocks, IFS can help you make lasting changes and unlock your potential.
  • What is the difference between IFS and other therapeutic modalities?
IFS is unique because it focuses on understanding and healing the different parts of yourself. While other therapies may help you manage symptoms or analyze behavior, IFS goes deeper by addressing the root causes of your issues—often parts of you that formed as a response to past experiences. It’s not just about talking through problems; it’s about healing and integrating all the parts of yourself so you can move forward with greater peace and clarity.
  • Can I do IFS if I’ve never done therapy before?
Yes! IFS is accessible to everyone, whether you’re new to therapy or have previous experience. You don’t need to have any special background or experience to benefit from IFS. The approach is compassionate, gentle, and client-centered, so you’ll be supported throughout the process, no matter where you’re starting from.
  • How will IFS help with my specific issue (e.g., anxiety, relationship problems, career challenges)?
IFS is effective for a wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, career blocks, and emotional pain. By working with the parts of you that hold the unresolved emotions or beliefs related to these challenges, IFS helps to heal the underlying causes, leading to more sustainable change. For example, if you’re struggling in your career, IFS can help you address the internal parts that are holding you back—whether they stem from fear, self-doubt, or past experiences.
  • Is IFS suitable for people who have already tried traditional therapy?
Yes, IFS is often a great option for those who have tried other therapies and still feel like something is missing or haven’t fully resolved certain issues. If traditional therapy has helped manage symptoms but hasn’t addressed deeper patterns or the root causes of your challenges, IFS offers a deeper, more holistic approach that gets to the heart of the matter.
  • How do online IFS sessions work?
Online IFS sessions work just as effectively as in-person sessions. We’ll connect via a secure video platform (Zoom), and I’ll guide you through the session from the comfort of your own space. For the best experience, ensure you’re in a quiet, private place where you can relax and focus without interruptions. You’ll also need a reliable internet connection and a comfortable setting to make the most of our time together.
  • Will I have to relive painful memories during IFS therapy?
In IFS, we don’t force you to relive painful memories. Instead, we work with the parts of you that hold onto these memories, and we approach them with compassion and understanding. You’ll never be asked to rehash past trauma in a way that feels overwhelming. The focus is on healing and rewriting those memories in a safe, gentle way that helps release any emotional burdens.
  • What kind of results can I expect from IFS therapy?
IFS therapy can help you experience profound shifts in how you see yourself and how you relate to the world. Clients often feel a greater sense of inner peace, clarity, and self-compassion. Many report breakthroughs in areas they’ve struggled with for years—whether it’s healing past wounds, improving relationships, or feeling more confident and aligned in their life. The changes are deep and lasting, leading to a more fulfilling and authentic way of being.
  • What is the cost of a session?
Each IFS session is €60. This price reflects the value of the transformative work we’ll do together, helping you heal and make lasting changes in your life. I believe in providing accessible, high-quality therapy that supports your personal growth and well-being. If you’re ready to take the next step, I’m here to guide you through the process.
